Tickets for our 2008 St. Joseph’s Dinner, which takes place on Saturday, March 29, are now on sale! Tickets are $25 per person, and may be purchased at church, the next two Sundays, following our 6:00 PM Mass. If you’re not planning to be at St. M’s either of the next two Sundays, you can purchase dinner tickets by calling Niko Maljuzic at (202) 997-6489. Our March 29 dinner is being held at All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church, which is located at 2300 Cathedral Avenue, NW (near the Woodley Park Metro station on the Red Line). Doors will open at 7:00 PM; and, the festivities will begin at 7:30 PM. We hope all of you will plan to join us!

Our annual Chapter election process is now underway here at Dignity/Washington, and nominations are now being sought for the office of Chapter President (1-year term) and six open seats on the Board of Directors (2-year term). The only “official” requirement is that you be a member of the Chapter; unofficially, you are someone who cares about the Dignity/Washington community and wants to make it better. While our members make things happen in D/W, the Board of Directors provides the structure. Among other responsibilities, Board Members are expected to attend a monthly meeting (on the first Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 PM at the Dignity Center, lasting approximately two hours); evaluate and plan ongoing and special community programs and activities within our $100 K annual budget; and, share responsibility for such things as our after-Mass socials, etc. Our Board meetings operate under Roberts Rules of Order, with most decisions achieved through consensus. If you’d like

to know more about the duties and responsibilities of being Chapter President or a member of the Board – or, if you are ready to make a commitment to be a candidate – please see or contact a member of this year’s Election Committee: Tom Bower (202-986-0917), Brian Hinman (202-488-0720), or Dave Kolesar (301-982-6786). The nomination deadline is March 31; and, shortly thereafter, all nominees will be asked to prepare brief statements about why they want to serve the community.

We are very pleased to announce that the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC, has selected Dignity/Washington as a recipient of its “2008 Distinguished Service Award.” The GLAA presents awards to local individuals and organizations that have served the GLBT community in the national capital area, and D/W is among 2008’s six honorees. This year’s awards will be presented at GLAA’s 37th Anniversary Reception, which takes place on Thursday, April 17, at the Washington Plaza Hotel. For more information about the reception and tickets for the event, you can view the invitation online at: http://www.glaa.org/archive/2008/anniversaryinvite0308.pdf.

Our next D/W Bridge group game at the Dignity Center is this coming Monday, March 17, at 7:30 PM. If you’d like to join us for a casual evening of contract bridge, please come by! Our next “Movie Night at the Dignity Center” is Monday, March 24; and, the feature is the 1973 film “Fantastic Planet.” Doors open at 7:00, and the movie starts at 7:30.

This coming Sunday, March 16, is Passion (Palm) Sunday; and, our 6:00 PM Mass at St. Margaret’s will begin with our procession with palms. Following are complete details on our Dignity services for Holy Week:

Thursday, March 20 – Holy Thursday Mass (with Dignity/Northern Virginia) at 8:00 PM, at Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill, in Alexandria, VA (3606 Seminary Road).
Friday, March 21 – Good Friday Service (with D/NoVA) at 8:00 PM, at St. Margaret’s Church.

Saturday, March 22
– Holy Saturday Vigil Mass (with D/NoVA) at 8:00 PM, at Immanuel Church. Attendees are invited to bring Easter lilies to decorate the altar area. Following the service, there will be a “potluck finger-food/dessert social” in the church hall; all are invited to bring something to share, and stay for the social (which will include a 50/50 raffle to help raise funds for Dignity/NoVA).
Sunday, March 23 – Easter Sunday Mass at 6:00 PM, at St. Margaret’s Church.

Special Note: Our Liturgy chair, Chris Hinkle, has offered to be a point of contact for those who may need rides to the Holy Week services being held at Immanuel Church in Alexandria. Chris may be contacted at: chinkle@netlinkrg.com.

Finally, I wanted to pass along this note received from member Russ Nevins: For those old-timers who remember Reina DuVal, Russ has a recording of her being interviewed on radio station WMAL (AM 630) about ten years back. To get a copy of this recording from Russ, please email him at RNevins@alum.mit.edu or call him at (301) 294-7346.

Our good Dignity/Northern Virginia friend (and travel professional) Harry Benjamin is planning to lead a group of interested participants in a journey to the Holy Land in March of next year (2009). He is announcing the trip at this time so that those who are interested can plan both their calendars and their budgets. Attached, for your information, is the detailed itinerary for this “Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.” For more details, you should contact Harry (at “Departure Point Travel”) on (703) 242-4203; or by email at: departurepoint@aol.com.

Another of our good friends, Jeannine Gramick, has asked that we pass along some information to any lesbian women over age 60. The organization “Old Lesbians Organizing for Change” has announced plans for a national gathering entitled “California Dreaming: Building a Better World for Every Old Lesbian” to be held at the Hacienda Hotel in Los Angeles, California, from July 30 to August 3, 2008. For registration and other information, please go to: www.oloc.org.
